What makes a good
hotel housekeeping trolley?
A clean and tidy room is important to any hotel guest, whether they're staying at a large, established chain or a small, independent, family-run guest house. Keeping rooms clean is the responsibility of the housekeeping/cleaning staff, and this is where having a well-stocked housekeeping trolley can really make the difference. But, what should your trolley include exactly?
Essentially, what you include on your housekeeping trolley depends on a number of factors.
In a small hotel with just a handful of rooms, you might only need a very small trolley with the basic equipment, especially if it's fairly easy to get to and from the cleaning store cupboard. However, it might not be practical to go from one part of a hotel to another in a large establishment every time you need a toilet roll, for example, so larger housekeeping trolleys will be more useful allowing you to conveniently store more items.
While the size of the hotel will determine what kind of supplies your housekeeping trolleys need, so will the type of establishment and the particular services or amenities that you provide for guests. In some hotels, for example, you might just find soap in the bathroom, while others may offer a wider variety of complimentary toiletries, including shampoo, shower gel, a sewing kit, cotton buds and a shower cap. Some hotel rooms include facilities to make drinks, refreshments and a mini bar, so supplies to replenish these will need to find a place on your trolley. Luxury and spa hotels even provide hotel bathrobes and slippers for guests, so fresh supplies of these will need to be a feature of household trolleys in these settings.
Despite this variation, there are a number of housekeeping supplies that will form the mainstay of housekeeping trolleys in any location or establishment.
Cleaning chemicals
You'll need a range of cleaning chemicals to tackle the bathroom, floors and surface areas of each room. The exact chemicals you require may depend on the material type you need to clean. For instance, a wooden floor will demand a different type of cleaner to that needed to scrub up a stainless steel sink, while a toilet will require bleach to remove germs, and a window will necessitate a special window cleaning fluid.
Hotels with tea and coffee making facilities in rooms will need cups, glasses and spoons cleaning during each round, so a general-purpose washing-up liquid will need a place on the trolley.

Supplies
As well as making a room look spick and span, it's the housekeeper's job to ensure that the room's supplies are replenished so that guests don't run out of anything, and have access to clean items.
A trolley will, therefore, need to store items such as toilet rolls, bin liners, fresh towels, fresh bed linen, paper towels, bars of soap or liquid soap, as well as any complimentary toiletries such as shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste or a shower cap. Those rooms that offer tea and coffee making facilities may need their tea, coffee and sugar supplies topping up, so these will also need to be included on the trolley.

Removing dirty items
Keeping a hotel room clean involves removing waste from the bins and taking away dirty towels and bed linen. Housekeeping trolleys should have sections to store large waste bags to collect rubbish from a room, with separate bags to hold dirty towels and linens.
Accessories
There is a range of additional housekeeping accessories that deserve a place on a trolley, depending on the needs of each establishment. For example, housekeepers don't always just clean rooms; they often have to clean corridors, lifts and other areas of the hotel, too. If they have recently mopped the floor of these external areas, they might need to place safety signs to warn guests that the floor is wet, and, therefore, potentially slippy. Storing these signs on the housekeeping trolley means the housekeeper has them to hand when they need them.
Housekeepers may also need to place signage or information in rooms for guests, which can be stored on the trolley. In particular, many hotels place hygiene strips across toilets when they have been cleaned.
A caddy or rack might also be a useful addition to the trolley for storing small items such as cutlery or pens.
